Following a bit of a wake up call Wednesday with a 6-1 loss to Roseau, the Pirates bounced back in Thursday's Thief River Falls Invitational and finished just three points behind Roseau and one point behind Thief River Falls for third place.
Pirate head coach Mike Geffre said of the tight tournament, "We were two tiebreakers away at second doubles and two tiebreakers away at third doubles. If we win those we beat everyone, even Roseau, and win the tournament. The bonus is we made some progress and keep moving forward."
Crookston was led by its steady first doubles team of Jaclyn Proulx and Rachel Lariviere, who won all three of their matches, including a straight-set win over the Roseau duo of Megan Foley and Ingrid Mlodzik, who beat them Wednesday.
A pair of runner-up finishes from Lilli Denison at third singles and the fourth singles combo of Lizzy Awender and Amber Johnson helped give the Pirates more team points.
The rest of the Pirates finished third including Riley Erickson at first singles, Michelle Stahlecker at second singles, Kylie Simmons and Bailey Morris at second doubles, and the doubles teams of Natalie Koch and Amber Trostad and Abby Wilder and Caitlin Wahouske at third doubles.
Coach Geffre mentioned he was able to see where his squad stacked up against the section rivals. He noted the Prowlers have a similar team to his own.
"Thief River has some nice doubles teams," he said. "They are tricky to match up with. They have three solid doubles and their singles are OK. Kind of what we've been doing. I think they are similar to us."
The Pirates will have today to practice and get ready for the eight-team Pirate Booster Invitational Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
