U of M, Crookston Football announced its 2012 recruiting class of 13 players Wednesday. It is first year head coach Paul Miller’s first recruiting class.
“One of our objectives was to improve defensively and I think we accomplished that with a number of kids we got,” Coach Miller told the Times this morning. “We got some offers out there that we’re hoping to close on today. We accomplished some of the things we set out to do, but we are not anywhere done. We have a young man here right now that we like very much, but it’s an ongoing process. The signing date clarifies stuff, but we will continue to work at it. We probably won't be done until who knows when.”
Coach Miller noted that adding experience was one of the objectives.
“We were very young a year ago,” he said. “Our upper classes don’t have the numbers where we want them to be. We came in with the idea of adding a few junior college guys.”
The Golden Eagles are targeting a few more local athletes too, in addition to East Grand Forks’ Adam Lawrence, who signed Wednesday with UMC.
“Cole Jackson is a big D-lineman, which was a priority for us,” Coach Miller stated. “We got an outstanding, heavily recruited linebacker out of Texas named Renee Lawson, who is a tremendous athlete. We feel good about Adam Lawrence out of East Grand Forks. We also have a couple of local kids we are still talking with beyond Adam.”
The signing day list includes six from Minnesota, two from Texas, two from Florida and one from each North Dakota, Iowa and Wisconsin.
Four linebackers and four offensive linemen make up more than half the list along with two wide receivers, two defensive linemen and a tight end.
“We are excited about what's transpired,” said Coach Miller. “We are going to stay after it. We feel like we made positive steps with this recruiting class.”
The 2012 season begins Aug. 30 in Winona, Minn. against Winona State. The home opener is Sept. 8 against Concordia, St. Paul.
