The Pirates jumped out to 38-27 halftime lead on Warroad Tuesday in Crookston and survived a second half surge by the Warriors to win 66-61 in a Section 8AA North contest.
Freshman Aaron Hollcraft led Crookston with 21 points, while junior Brett Delage added 20.
Back on Dec. 16, the Warriors edged the Pirates in overtime 63-61 in Warroad, Minn.
"We've always had good battles with Warroad," Pirate Head Coach Greg Garmen said after the game. "We did some foolish things at the end and it appeared like it would be like the game we played earlier against them. We've won a few close games now and that's a character builder. We just have to keep things rolling."
Crookston has now won five of its last six games and is 7-5 on the season.
Adding to Hollcraft and Delage's numbers were senior Jordan Brewster with eight points, senior Aaron Remick with seven and senior Ross Forney and junior Alec Boike each scoring five.
"We've been getting off to good starts lately," Coach Garmen said. "We're near the midseason point and the guys are figuring it out. Brett (Delage) is shooting well lately. Aaron (Hollcraft) was a little tired at the Concordia game. He had two big games before that."
Ross Merriman had a game-high 23 points for Warroad, while Alan Peterson added 22. Each had just seven points in the first half.
"Thank goodness they were cold early," Coach Garmen said. "I think everybody got their money's worth tonight. That seems to be our goal every night."
The Pirates pulled away in the first half with an 19-7 run over a five minute span to go up 32-18 with 3:21 left. The run featured a trio of three pointers from Hollcraft.
Warroad closed the gap with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes, cutting the deficit to eight points. But the Pirates worked the ball around in the waning seconds of the half and Forney hit an open three pointer at the buzzer to bring the lead back up to 11.
Crookston held tight with Warroad to start the second half but the Warriors finally started hitting shots as they knocked down four three pointers over a span of about three minutes to cut the deficit to just four points at 54-50 with 8:40 left.
The Pirates answered with a 5-0 run to bring the lead back up but the Warriors were just as quick to respond again. They went on an 8-0 run in less than three minutes to cut Crookston's lead to just three at 61-58 with 3:39 to play.
The next two buckets were scored by the Pirates, though, to give them a cushion as they went on to win by five.
Crookston, now 4-3 against Section 8AA opponents, travels to Roseau on Friday to face the Rams in another Section 8AA North battle. The Pirates defeated the Rams 68-40 in Crookston back on Dec. 13.
