The Pirates and Bemidji squared off in Grand Forks.

GRAND FORKS - Emma Borowicz (So.) picked up her team-leading 22nd victory of the season, but the Crookston Pirates could not snag any other wins against Bemidji, a double-A team, as they fell 6-1 at Grand Forks Choice Fitness.

Borowicz played in third singles for the team's second meeting of the season against Bemidji. The sophomore won her match with ease sweeping her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Despite owning the most individual wins on the team, Head Coach Mike Geffre plans to keep Borowicz in the same spot for the section tournament, but praises her for adding depth to his lineup.

"[Emma's] probably improved more than anybody on our team," Head Coach Mike Geffre said. "She's still our number three singles player or one doubles player. She hasn't played any one singles girls so she isn't at that level yet. Hayden [Winjum] and Cat [Tiedemann] are tough so I'm fortunate enough to have a one, two and three who are all about the same."

In second singles, Hayden Winjum (Fr.) nearly pulled out a first set win in her match, but dropped the set 7-6(7-5) and went on to lose the second set 6-3. The second doubles team of Hannah Lindemoen (Fr.) and Eden Haller (Jr.) met a similar fate. The pair fell short in set one 6-1 and took the second set into a tiebreaker, but ultimately lost 7-6(7-5).

In Crookston's other meeting against Bemidji three weeks ago, the Pirates lost 5-2. Geffre purposefully switched up the lineup compared to last time out and admitted to sacrificing a few individual wins in order to improve certain aspects of his team's game.

"If I would have done a doubles-strong lineup, we probably could've won all three doubles matches, but we couldn't have won a singles match," Geffre said. "We could've lost 4-3, but it's still a loss. We just went out with a lineup where if we play well, we have a chance at winning. If we don't, we're going to lose. We could've lost 4-3, but we wanted to work on some things."
