Hailey Spivey's first goal of the year assisted Crookston to their first victory of the season.

The Crookston Pirates took part in a busy weekend and played two matches in as many days. After dropping a match to Hibbing 3-1 on Friday night, the winless Pirates came back the next day and bounced Mesabi East 1-0 on Hailey Spivey's goal and notched their first win of the season.

Hibbing L 3-1

Hibbing started strong and tacked on two goals for a quick 2-0 lead 25 minutes into the match.

Kylee Meier (Jr. GK) and Reese Swanson (Seventh Grade GK) played in the net for the Pirates (1-11-1). Meier stopped five shots in half number one and Swanson recorded 14 saves in the second half.

"Kylee played great in the net and played sweeper in the second half," Head Coach Sarah Reese said. "Reese was dynamite in the goal."

After an unproductive first half for the Pirates, Mackenze Epema (So. M) knocked in her team-leading third goal of the season to make the score 2-1. The goal came following an indirect free kick and a pass from Elise Erdman (Sr. M) seven minutes into the second half.

Three minutes later, Hibbing doubled their lead and held on the rest of the way to win 3-1.

Mesabi East W 1-0

Still in search of their first win, Crookston's defense performed well on the road and a timely goal by Hailey Spivey (Sr. M) granted the Pirates victory number one.

"We played fantastic today," Reese said. "We made good passes and runs and had lots of shots which is good to see. We were persistent to get to the net. It was fun to get a win today."

Swanson played the entire match in the net and stopped the three shots she faced.

The score remained deadlocked at halftime and for the first 15 minutes of the second half. Finally, at the 55-minute mark, Spivey beat the keeper for her first goal of the season which gave Crookston a 1-0 lead.

The Pirates fired off 15 shots on goal, only one found the back of the net, but it proved to be enough.

Crookston begins the first of their final three regular season matches at home against East Grand Forks on Tuesday, October 2. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
