The Golden Eagles took on Adams State for the first game of the 2018 season.

    It was the season opener for the Minnesota Crookston Women’s Soccer team in Nampa, Idaho. The Golden Eagles took on Adams State for the first game of the 2018 season.

    The game would turn out to be a high scoring affair with both teams combing for a whopping eight goals, in a 5-3 Adams State victory.

    The game would start out scoreless for the first eight minutes and eleven seconds. At the 8:11 mark, Adams State would start out the scoring with a goal from Diana Cerillo. The Grizzlies lead wouldn’t last long.

    Maggee Hodgdon, a freshman from Newberg, Ore., would get her career as a Golden Eagle off to a fast start. Hodgdon would score the first goal of the season for her squad, at the 15:24 mark of the first half. Two minutes later, Hodgdon said two goals is greater than one as she sniped her second goal of the game for a 2-1 Golden Eagle lead.

    The Minnesota Crookston lead wouldn’t last long as Adams State would get a goal from Natalie Wheelock on a free kick at the 18:08 minute. That would be the start of four consecutive goals for the Grizzlies.

    Head coach Joe Alianiello, in his seventh year at the helm of the Golden Eagles though his team came to play in the season opener.

    “I thought we had a great first half today,” said Alieniello. “Unfortunately, we made too many mistakes in the defensive final third today that costs us.”

    Minnesota Crookston will have a chance to rebound later on in the weekend, with a match against California State University, Monterey Bay at 11 a.m. on Saturday morning. The trio for the Golden Eagles will wrap up Monday afternoon at 1 p.m., with a battle against the hosts of the weekend, Northwest Nazarene University.

    The loss for Minnesota Crookston in the season opener drops their record to 0-1-0, while the Grizzlies of Adams State starts out the season at 1-0-0.
