The Pirates began to mount a comeback, but the Green Wave held off them off for their third win over Crookston this season.

For the third time this season, the Crookston Pirates met up with the East Grand Forks Green Wave. East Side took the first two and came in to Crookston to claim their third win over the Pirates of the season 56-45.

“We played much better defensively,” Head Coach Darin Zimmerman said. “[We] had great effort and did a nice job of disrupting the passing lanes. EGF is a good team so they were able to beat us for some easy buckets at times, but I thought overall it was a good defensive game for us.”

Crookston played their closest game of the season against the Green Wave. Junior forward Rachel Hefta and senior guard Jaeden Lizakowski each notched 12 points to lead the team. Senior guard Bailey Folkers, who leads the team in points for the season, totaled eight and freshman guard Emma Borowicz, second in team points, scored six. Both Folkers and Borowicz average approximately 9.8 points per game.

Junior forward Hailey Seaver contributed four, eighth grade guard Hayden Winjum put up two and junior guard Hannah Emanuel hit a free throw to round out the scoring.

The Pirates found a way to make the game closer after trailing 27-12 following the conclusion of the first half, but Zimmerman cites the first half deficit as the main reason for the loss.

“Offensively,  we just didn't click in the first half,” Zimmerman said. “Too many turnovers and didn't finish shots in the paint. I thought we did a much better job in the second half attacking and getting better shots. If we could have played better offensively in the first half, we would have been able to make it more interesting and put ourselves in a better position at the finish.”

Crookston outscored the Green Wave 33-29 in the second half, but still fell short by 11 points. The Pirates have dropped four of their last five after winning five of six and their record falls to .500 at 9-9.

With eight games to play in the regular season, the Pirates will head to Fargo for a neutral site game against Pelican Rapids. The game takes place on Saturday, February 3 at the Fargo Civic Center. Tip-off is 10 a.m.
