A hot day in Crookston that exceeded 90 degrees did not keep the Pirates tennis team from claiming another match. Crookston swept the singles matches, took one doubles match and defeated Moorhead in the first match of a triangular cut short due to heat.

Head Coach Mike Geffre switched up the lineup and it worked. Each of the Pirates’ singles players not only won their matches, but only dropped one set out of nine. Jaeden Lizakowski, Catherine Tiedemann and Hayden Winjum each won in two sets. Hannah Street was forced to play a third set tiebreaker and won it 8-6 to take the match.

In the doubles category, the first team of Ally Tiedemann and Amy Follette won in two sets. The second doubles team of Emma Borowicz and Nissa Brekken lost a close first set 7-5 and won the second set 6-2 to force a third set tiebreaker, but lost 7-2. Emily Barrus and Elysa Christensen lost in the third doubles match, but the Pirates had already clinched the match as a team.

“I thought most of our girls played very well,” Head Coach Mike Geffre said. “Being that it’s warm, they
competed hard and got after it. I thought we still had a lot left and I don’t think our girls were very fatigued yet.”

The Pirates were scheduled to play Thief River Falls later in the afternoon, but the match was postponed due to heat much to the chagrin of the Crookston players.

Geffre commented that he wishes the match against Thief River Falls would have been played.

“I think we would’ve played pretty well,” Geffre said. “I think our kids were really pumped up to play that one.”

Crookston and Moorhead intended to complete a match the doubles team of Christensen and Street were in the middle of when the two schools last played on September 1. However, they decided against it and the match will go in the books as a tie as will the team match with each team winning three matches each.

The Pirates’ win gives them an 11-4- 1 record on the season.
