The University of Minnesota Crookston football program announced the addition of Derek Derr as an assistant coach.

    The University of Minnesota Crookston football program announced the addition of Derek Derr as an assistant coach. Derr will serve as strength and conditioning coordinator and tight ends coach for the Golden Eagles. Derr comes to the U of M Crookston from Peru State College in Peru, Neb., where he spent the last seven seasons, most recently serving as defensive coordinator, linebacker coach and strength and conditioning coordinator.

    “Derek is very highly regarded by his peers at Peru State College,” said Head Coach Mark Dufner. “He has a great passion for coaching; in addition, Derek has a firm background in strength and conditioning. He will be an outstanding addition to the Golden Eagle football staff.”

    In 2016, Derr was named the Co-Assistant Coach of the Year for the Heart of America Athletic Conference North Division. His defense was ranked in the top 20 nationally for total defense, pass defensive efficiency and pass defense per game. They led the Heart of America Athletic Conference in total defense per game and pass defense per game and were fourth in pass defense efficiency and fifth for overall sacks. In 2015, Derr helped the Bobcats to a 7-4 mark, their best record since 2000. His 2015 squad was ranked in the top 20 nationally for rushing defense per game and was second in the conference for total defense per game.

    During his time at Peru State, he coached nine all-conference players in two years as defensive coordinator. He had eight players named all-conference during his time as linebacker coach.

    Derr also helped mold the Bobcats into a strong team with his work in the weight room as strength and conditioning coach. He developed football specific programs for weight-room and field conditioning, organized lifting/running programs, improved student-athlete lifting/running techniques and instructed proper techniques to ensure safety. Derr is a USAW Certified Sports Performance Coach.

    During his time at Peru State, he also served as intramural director for two years and was an adjunct professor for one year.

    Derr earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management in 2010 from Peru State, graduating Magna Cum Laude. He obtained his Master of Science in Organization Management with an emphasis in Sports and Recreation Management in 2014 from Wayne State College (Neb.).

    Derr, a native of Maitland, Mo., lettered for four years for Peru State, serving as team captain as a senior. He was a member of the Peru State College 3.0 club for four years and was named an NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete two years. He played indoor football for the Iowa Blackhawks from 2010-11, winning the American Professional Football League (APFL) Championship in 2010.

    Derr joins a staff at Minnesota Crookston that includes: Mark Dufner (Head Coach), Dave Volk (Co-Offensive Coordinator/Run Game Coordinator/Offensive Line-Running Backs), Michael Orts (Co-Offensive Coordinator/Pass Game Coordinator/Quarterbacks-Wide Receivers), Levi Bullerman (Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line-Linebackers), Tom Miller (Assistant Head Coach/Recruiting Coordinator/Safeties) and Sam Smith (Special Teams Coordinator/Cornerbacks. The Golden Eagles will commence the 2017 schedule Aug. 31 as they host Upper Iowa University on a Thursday evening at 4 p.m. at Ed Widseth Field.
