Pirates face Litchfield at noon today (Wednesday).
The Crookston Pirates boys tennis team ran into a tough roadblock in the first round of the Minnesota State High School League Class A tournament Tuesday.
Facing off against the Blake School at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center in St. Paul, Crookston was unable to take down its opponent and ultimately fell 7-0.
“The first match obviously was a tough one, playing the best team in the state,” Pirates head coach Mike Geffre said. “They’re a pretty dominating team. No one in the state has come close to playing with them this year. They’re the best team I think anybody is going to see so that created a problem for us.”
The Pirates rebounded in their second matchup of Tuesday’s state meet with a 4-3 victory over the Fridley Tigers.
“Just a fun high school tennis match,” Geffre said. “Very competitive, real high energy. A lot of yelling, a lot of cheering.
“It was probably one of the more exciting high school tennis matches that I’ve had as a coach from the standpoint of the way the kids were getting after it.”
With the win over Fridley, Crookston advancede to the consolation championship against Litchfield.
“They’re going to be a tough opponent,” Geffre said. “I’ve known their coach and the program for years and its just going to be another high school tennis team match.
“It’s a high class program at Litchfield. It’s probably a tough matchup for us but if we go out and play well it’s going to be a good match.”
The matchup took place at noon today (Wednesday) but the results were not available when the Times went to press.
