Ally Tiedemann and Maddie Nicholls will be returning to familiar ground next week.

Posting individual scores of 156 and 166 respectively, Tiedemann and Nicholls will be heading to the Minnesota State High School League State Golf Tournament in Jordan.  Tiedemann and Nicholls participated in the state tournament last year, as well.

“Giving them the opportunity to go down and see what they can do at the state tournament is nice,” Pirates girls head coach Jeff Perreault said. “Those two girls were able to kind of put something together and get themselves to the next level and I’m proud of them.”

The Pirates finished second overall as a team with a two-day totoal of 671, 20 strokes behind defending Section 8AA champs Detroit Lakes.

“(Yesterday) we struggled a bit,” Perreault said. “Everybody plays the same course so its how the course suits you or your game. Weather was good. Wind was up a little bit (yesterday). There were some spots that they had pins that were difficult so a lot of three or four putts happening out there.

I know obviously they would have liked to have seen the whole team go.”

Crookston senior Elise Tangquist missed the cut to go to the state tournament as well by two strokes.

“The amount of time that she’s put into her game, to me as a coach, it justifies a reward,” Perreault said. “That reward would be to go to a state tournament and she was two strokes out.

“It hurts because you can easily go back and look at her two rounds and find those two strokes. She’s just a great kid. A class act. Super competitive kid that you just wanted to see her make it to the state tournament. It was bugging me and it certainly stung a little bit for her. I know she’ll rebound.”

Tiedemann and Nicholls will be joined by boys golfer teammate Dane Anderson in the State Golf Tournament in Jordan Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14.

“We’ll have a couple of structured practices Thursday and Friday,” Perreault said. “I truly believe the short game is where its at for both of the girls that are going down (to the state tournament). Work around the greens a lot.

“Part of it is mental. They know the course. They’ve seen the course so nothing new for them. We’ll have a practice round on Monday and we’ll see what they can do Tuesday and Wednesday.

Crookston finishes third, Anderson heads to state
The Crookston Pirates boys golf team came up just short of reaching one of its season goals.

With a team score of 639, the Pirates finished third overall as a team behind Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls and missing the cut to heading to state as a team.

“Overall (yesterday) we did not quite accomplish our goal of getting the whole entire team down (to state),” Pirates boys head coach Steve Kofoed said. “They shot right around what their season average was. It just wasn’t quite what we were looking for and catching Detroit Lakes to make it out as a whole team.”

Detroit Lakes defended its title as Section  8AA Champs with a two-day score of 619.

Pirate senior Dane Anderson led the team with a 153 and will be making the trip to the MSHSL state meet in Jordan on Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14.

“It was nice to get anouther Pirate down to the state tournament,” Kofoed said. “Dane was, for the most part, in control of the way he was playing and able to shoot a score that was needed to be able to make it down there for a second year in a row which is awesome.”

Anderson competed in the state tournament last year and tied for 45th place with a 159. Kofoed will work with Anderson this week in teeing off, putting and overall how he can be a contender with other golfers inthe state.

“Jordan has a lot of hazards on the river bottom but you’ve got to be able to get up and down and putt also. Dane is a good enough player to be able to take advantage of the birdie holes down there and our goal is to get him around the 150 goal for the two days.”
