Garmen, Wavra and Boerger lead Crookston to win.

Greg Garmen had never stepped into a swamp with gators before.

Nonetheless, the Crookston head coach left with what he wanted as the Pirates boys basketball team claimed a 63-33 victory over the Badger/Greenbush-Middle River Gators Tuesday in Section 8AA play.

“BGMR was a good game for the PIrates,” Garmen said. “The kids were disciplined and worked together very well.”

The team collaboration led the Pirates to take a 33-17 halftime lead before cruising to the 30-point victory.

“This was a good effort on our part and we came out with some energy,” Garmen said.

Senior guards Matt Garmen, Chris Wavra and Todd Boerger led Crookston throughout the night offensively, scoring a combined 36 points against the Gators.

“Matt and Chris have been getting it ‘dialed’ in as of late and have been steadily improving their play on both ends of the floor,” Garmen said. “Todd B. has been doing well, too, both in the defensive end of the floor and the offensive end.”

Crookston improves to 12-8 on the year wtih Tuesday’s win.

The Pirates return to action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Ada to take on the Ada-Borup Cougars.

“Thursday we will face a very good Ada team,” Garmen said. “They have good overall size and are athletic as all get out, so we will need to play with that energy we speak of and be fundamentally sound.”
