Crookston claims victories over International Falls, Lake of the Woods.

A trek up north to the Canadian border turned into a favorable weekend for the Crookston Pirates boys hockey team.

Despite the absence of their head coach, the Pirates cruised to back-to-back victories over the Lake of the Woods Bears Friday and the International Falls Broncos Saturday.
A steady attack throughout Friday’s contest with Lake of the Woods was more than enough for the Pirates as they claimed a 4-1 victory in Baudette.

Crookston senior forward Lauro Gutierrez scored the game’s first goal 6:17 into the first frame with assists off teammates Dane Anderson and Eric Delorme.

Two minutes later, Gutierrez and senior defender Ethan Christopherson assisted senior forward Zach Markovich with a power-play goal to double Crookston’s lead to 2-0.

Lake of the Woods rebounded, however, with a goal at 14:18 to cut its deficit to 2-1.
The next 13 minutes went scoreless before Crookston’s Ben Andringa broke the streak with his eighth goal of the season off Drew Dragseth’s assist.

The Pirates struck once more in the first minute of the final frame as sophomore forward Eric Delorme scored on an Anderson assist to ultimately give his team a 4-1 victory.

Crookston goalkeeper Cade Salentine made a total 24 saves in the net while LOW’s Lemuel Carradice made 16 at the opposite end.

Crookston overpowers International Falls
The Pirates hockey club carried its success from Friday’s contest into Saturday to claim a 3-1 victory over the International Falls Broncos.

Following 11 minutes of scoreless action, Crookston broke through with a goal by junior forward Ethan Magsam off assists from Christopherson and Anderson.

Just over six minutes later, Brock Heppner doubled the Pirates’ lead with his third goal of the season off assists from Andringa and Dragseth.

Crookston continued its attack in the second period when Anderson found the back of the Broncos’ net off the assist from Logan Wardner to give his squad a 3-0 lead.

International Falls avoided the shutout when Brett Lindvall scored an unassisted short-hand goal at 14:44 of the third frame.

However, the damage was done as Crookston’s defense closed out the game to claim the 3-1 win.

Salentine made a total 19 saves in Crookston’s net throughout the game while International Falls’ Jake Klow made 28 at the opposite end.

The Pirates improve to 9-14 on the season.

Crookston returns to action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Crookston Sports Center to take on the Red Lake Falls Eagles.

The Pirates’ final game of the regular season takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday on the road against Roseau.
