Crookston High School athletic coaches select Pirates of the Week for boys and girls basketball, boys and girls hockey and wrestling. Chosen athletes were published on Wednesday, Jan. 11.
Crookston High School Pirates coaches Greg Garmen, Darin Zimmerman, Josh Hardy, Jaclyn Martin and Wes Hanson select student athletes to be featured as Pirates of the Week. For the week of Jan. 9-13, the Crookston Daily Times features Zach Brown (wrestling), Charles Eickhof (boys hockey), Brita Fagerlund (girls basketball), Matt Garmen (boys basketball), Brelee Jobe (girls hockey) and Katelyn Wagner (dance team).
Wrestling coach Wes Hanson says: "Zach is a real competitor and very solid technician on the mat. He had a great showing at the Mahnomen-Waubun Dual Tournament going 4-0 and making the all tournament team. He is a spark in our line-up at 106 pounds and is a very coachable wrestler. He continues to improve each week and currently has 11 wins already this season."
Boys hockey head coach Josh Hardy says: "Chuck is a senior who plays both forward and defense. His willingness to play wherever he is needed and ability to jump in and contribute at any time makes him an extremely valuable member of the Pirates. Chuck has a positive attitude and great work ethic and both will serve him well in he future."
Girls basketball head coach Darin Zimmerman says: "Brita brings a lot of energy everyday. She has improved a lot from a year ago. She plays great team defense and has been an important piece of our defense rotation. I would rate her as one of the best communicators on our team. We will need the energy and excitement that Brita brings this month as we have a busy month with 3 games nearly every week."
Boys basketball head coach Greg Garmen says: "Matt has been steady all year and does a great job running the point for the Pirates. In our only game last week, he was hot in the first half scoring 14. Matt also does a nice job in terms of assists, rebounding and defending for the Pirates."
Girls hockey head coach Jaclyn Martin says: "Brelee is a second year starting goalie for us this year. She's a junior and has started off the season very well and continues to surprise the coaching staff. Last night shey faced nearly 70 shots. Brelee always stands on her head and never gives up. She's a leader whether she'll admit it or not and we are blessed to have her as our tender."
Dance team coach Adrianne Winger says: "(Katelyn) is a great leader and captain! Always determined to help the team improve and do their best."
