Crookston defeats Roseau at home following loss to same team earlier in the season.
On Dec. 28, 2016, Greg Garmen’s club traveled to Roseau for a clash with the hosting Rams but came up short in a 56-46 loss.
The Pirates boys basketball squad bounced back and got its revenge on Friday with a convincing 68-49 win over Roseau at Crookston High School.
“We played one of our better halves of the season, so we were very pleased about that,” Garmen said. “We came out with a lot of energy and determination, after not having very much a week ago when we were up at Roseau.”
Crookston came out strong in the first half of Friday’s contest and took a 44-25 lead into halftime.
Both teams were more evenly matched in the final 18 minutes of the game as each scored 24 points, but the damage was already taken care of in the first half as the Pirates ultimately claimed th 19-point victory.
Senior guard Chris Wavra walked away with a game-high 17 points against the Rams, while fellow senior teammates Luke Froeber, Ryan Swenson and Matt Garmen each tallied 14.
“Anytime you have a balance in scoring it is going help,” Garmen said. “It makes it tough for other teams to guard any one person, so that was good to see.”
The Pirates improve to 5-5 on the year with Friday’s win.
Crookston returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the road to take on the East Grand Forks Green Wave.
“We are looking forward to a good week of practice and then going to EGF, which is always a great rivalry for us,” Garmen said. “Should be a fun week.”
