UMC men defeat St. Cloud State, lose to UMD.

Following the first 20 minutes of the game, the University of Minnesota Crookston men’s basketball team found itself trailing by six at halftime against the St. Cloud State University Huskies.

With 12 minutes to go inthe second half of Saturday’s game, the Golden Eagles found their deficit increased to 13.

When the final buzzer sounded, however, the visiting Huskies found themselves on the opposite side as UMC came back to win 92-89 in conference action.

“(Saturday) we competed for 40 minutes against a very, very good St. Cloud team,” UMC head coach Dan Weisse said. “I was very proud because it took all 14 guys on our team to get that win.

“The guys really believed in each other, they were cheering for each other, playing together and that’s the culture we’re trying to bring here (to UMC.)”

SCSU shot 33-of-64 (51.6 percent) from the field, 7-of-17 (41.2 percent) from beyond the arc and 16-of-25 in free throws.

The Huskies were led by redshirt sophomore guard Gage Davis and senior guard Scottie Stone, who combined to 55 points scored against UMC.

“Gage Davis is one of the best players in our league and he will be for the next two years after this year,” Weisse said. “And Scottie Stone is a senior that can shoot the ball. They’re very hard to guard. They have a lot of weapons.

UMC shot 27-of-50 (54 percent) from the field, 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) from the 3-point range and 27-of-38 (71.1 percent) from the free-throw line.

UMD defeats UMC
UMC was unable to get the same outcome the night before as the squad fell 82-58 to the University of Minnesota Duluth at home.

“What a difference 24 hours makes because (Friday) we were a little bit down,” Weisse said. “I didn’t think we competed. It’s one thing to lose a game but I don’t think we competed (Friday)."

UMD shot 29-of-56 (51.8 percent) from the field, 13-of-25 (52 percent) from beyond the arc and 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) from the free-throw line.

UMC shot 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) from the field, 4-of-13 (30.8 percent) from the 3-point range and 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from the charity stripe.

Golden Eagle freshman guard Harrison Cleary, who typically averages at least 20 points-per-game, was kept to just 13 points against the Bulldogs.

UMC returns to action at 8 p.m. Tuesday on the road to take on the Bemidji State University Beavers at the Sanford Center.
