It has been an enlightening experience working at the Crookston Daily Times this summer.

It has been an enlightening experience working at the Crookston Daily Times this summer. I have learned lifelong skills, met interesting and intelligent people, and have truly had a blast working in the fun environment of the Times newsroom

Before I actually received the email asking if I would like to accept this internship, I had no idea that it would be offered to me or even that it was something that I would like to do. I vaguely knew of some other high schoolers who had the internship, but didn't really know much about it or even think about it. I don't think very highly of my own writing skills, and I am not very good at talking to people, so at first I was a little nervous. I knew that a reporter's job is to talk to people and write stories, so it sounded like a challenge. But I took a chance and accepted the job, and I am so glad I did. I have learned so much working here and will take away many valuable skills and memorable experiences.  I have seen things and met people that I would never have met and seen if I would not have come to work here.

On the job, I held a baby peregrine falcon, chased a fire truck, experienced a county board meeting, learned about opportunities and events I didn't know Crookston had, and got the chance to use my creativity for the Crookston Times Children's Library.

I have become connected to the community and have gotten to know my colleagues, who make the office a very interesting place. I have learned how to write objective news stories and subjective columns. I have been challenged to think and problem solve, keeping my brain working over the summer and saving money for college at the same time. While I would have never considered it before, working at the Times has made me realize that being a journalist is an interesting, challenging job that I could see myself possibly pursuing in college and as a career.

I have also realized what a vital part of the community the newspaper really is. The Crookston Daily Times works incredibly hard to make sure that a multitude of events, people, and businesses are recognized and publicized so that Crookston's community grows and stays vibrant. It also keeps the town up to date on all of the happenings in the community, both good and bad, and gets people talking about important issues in the community that they may not have know about unless they were publicized by the Times.  A town cannot thrive without the information that the local newspaper provides and spreads. Newspapers may sometimes seem archaic, but they are essential to the community.

It has been an illuminating summer working for such a vital part of Crookston.  I've learned a lot about writing, photography, working for a newsroom, and communication.  It has also been a lot of fun. Every day is something new, a new story to write or another photo adventure to go on. Internships are extremely beneficial and unique opportunities to learn and gain experience, and I am so thankful this one was offered to me.  Goodbye to the Crookston Daily Times, but I will forever hold the skills and knowledge gained by working here.
