Myrtle Gladys Hegg, 81, of Crookston, Minnesota, died Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2009, in the RiverView Care Center in Crookston.
Myrtle was born in East Grand Forks, Minnesota on November 1, 1927, one of seven children of the union of Gerhart and Marie L. (Anderson) Johnson. As a young child she moved with her family to the Dugdale area of Polk County and attended the Dugdale School. Myrtle was later employed at several Crookston businesses including the Commercial Hotel-Bus Depot, Great Northern Restaurant, Sweet Shop, Hasty Tasty, and the George Peters Store. She was united in marriage to Clayton Hegg at Crookston on May 30, 1947. After her marriage she did housekeeping duties for many Crookston families, and also worked as an Avon representative in the area. Sadly, Clayton passed away on August 11, 1969.
Myrtle was very active in the Crookston community as a longtime member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the VFW Auxiliary, and volunteer for the Meals on Wheels Program. The organization that became very dear to Myrtle’s heart was the Crookston Eagles Aerie #857 Auxiliary. In April of 2008 she received her 45-year membership pin. During those years she held all the offices in the Auxiliary, and was inducted into the Minnesota State Auxiliary Fraternal Order of Eagles Hall of Fame in 1999-2000. She was honored as the Crookston Park and Recreation Department’s "Experienced American" in September of 1999. Myrtle touched many lives and she very loving remembered and sadly missed by her family and many friends.
Family members include two brothers and a sister-in-law, Murrle Johnson of Grand Rapids, MN, and Gordon and Darla Johnson of Litchfield, MN; a sister, Gladys Carlisle of Two Harbors, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides her husband, Clayton, Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents, Gerhart and Marie Johnson; her step-father, Henry Camp; a brother and sister-in-law, George and Adeline Johnson; two infant brothers, Thomas and Harvey; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Johnson; and a brother-in-law, Charles Carlisle. The funeral service for Myrtle Hegg will be held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, May 13, 2009, in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston with the Rev. Jo Gast, officiating. Visitation will be held at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Tuesday from 5-7 pm, with a 7 pm prayer service, and also at the church for one hour before the funeral. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
