Elma Henrietta (Helgeson) Myrold, 92, of Fargo, North Dakota, and formerly of Crookston, Minnesota, died peacefully Friday evening, June 5, 2009, in the Manor Care Nursing Home in Fargo, with her family at her side. Elma was born in Crookston on March 23, 1917, the daughter of Miner and Tillie (Harstad) Helgeson. She was baptized and confirmed at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eldred and grew up at rural Crookston. Elma attended Crookston public schools and was a 1934 graduate of Central High School. During the summers of her junior and senior years of high school she and her family lived in St. Paul where her father, Miner, served in the Minnesota House of Representatives. After high school Elma began working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator. She was united in marriage to Clarence Arthur Myrold at the home of her parents on October 8, 1938.  The couple made their home south of Crookston, where Clarence farmed and together they raised four children- Les, Glenn, Jerry, and Judy. Elma continued her employment with Northwestern Bell, taking time off for the births of the kids. In 1962 the family moved into Crookston. Clarence continued to farm until retirement in the mid-1970s. Elma was honored for nearly twenty-eight years of dedicated service to Northwestern Bell when she retired in 1979. Sadly, Clarence passed away on October 23, 1990.  In November of 2005 Elma moved to an assisted living facility in East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and then on July 15, 2005 became a resident of the Manor Care Nursing Home in Fargo. She was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston and the Ladies Aid, and also held membership in the Communication Workers of America (CWA). For many years she had served the Community Star 4-H Club as an adult leader. Elma was an avid Minnesota Twins (and Kirby Puckett) fan, but her lifelong love was music, especially country music and big band music, and she also loved to dance. She passed this love on to her kids and grandkids, and nothing gave her more pleasure than watching them perform. Her family loved her dearly and they will hold special memories of her in their hearts always.

Family members include three sons, Les (Judith) Myrold of Alexandria, MN, Glenn Myrold and Jerome Myrold, both of Fargo, ND; daughter, Judith Johnson of Fargo; six grandchildren, Jeffrey Myrold of Fargo, Jason Myrold of Minneapolis, Lisa Mosing of Minneapolis, Ryan Myrold of Roseville, MN, Travis Myrold of Fargo, and Sara Johnson of West Fargo, ND. Elma also leaves seven great-grandchildren, Jordan Myrold of Bismarck, Dylan Myrold of West Fargo, Ava and Kellen Mosing of Minneapolis, Linus and Jetson Myrold and Mirna Hubner of Roseville, MN; a great-great grandson, Landen Michael Myrold of Bismarck; a brother, Gene (Wanda) Helgeson of San Manuel, AZ; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Helgeson of Crookston, MN and Marlys Helgeson of Davenport, IA; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Besides her beloved husband of fifty-two years, Clarence, Elma is preceded in death by her parents; and brothers, Milton and Curtis Helgeson. May God bless Elma’s memory.

The funeral service for Elma Myrold will be held at 12 Noon, Thursday, June 11, 2009, in Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston with the Rev. Steve Bohler, officiating. Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home on Wednesday from 5-7 pm, with a 6 pm prayer service, and also at the church for one hour before the funeral. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
