Nancy Irene Sherman, age 63, died peacefully on Wednesday, November 8, at MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, TX surrounded by her family. Nancy loved helping others and caring for those who needed encouragement. She loved her family, intimate conversation with her friends, music, and encouraging others in the Lord. Nancy became an inspiration to all as she endured the ravages of Leukemia which finally claimed her life. Those who know and love her will miss her beautiful smile and caring spirit.

Nancy was born in Crookston, MN on April 19, 1954 to Cleron and Ruth Carpenter, the youngest of four children. Growing up she loved music and was very active in band, orchestra and choir. During high school, she worked at the local hospital on weekends and holidays as a nurse’s aide. She attended the University of North Dakota where she graduated in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Nancy’s care and love for people led her to spend 40-years in the field of nursing. Over the course of her career, she worked one year at St. Luke’s Hospital in Fargo, ND on a medical/oncology floor and then chose to move to Texas where she worked two years at the Shriners Burns Institute in Galveston. She then worked eleven years caring for children in area pediatric clinics. For UTMB, she spent three years as a manager and trainer helping set up maternal/child care clinics, many of which remain active today.  She then moved on to help start a pilot program at UTMB for Medicaid members placed in managed care programs as the manager for the pediatric team. In March 2001, Nancy began at the Texas Children’s Health Plan, where she completed her career.

Nancy enjoyed her home, her fireplace, hand crafts such as embroidery and scrapbooking, and anything Minnesotan or Scandinavian. She was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, and grandmother who delighted in her family. Nancy married Curtis Hugh Sherman, Jr. in June of 1979. They have two sons, Matthew and wife Laura and Stephen and wife Megan; including three grandchildren, Clara Kate, William Hugh, and Otis James.

She is survived by brother, Ronald and wife Carol Carpenter, and their two sons and families; sister Jane Carpenter; sister Jean and husband Gilbert Penner, and their three children and families; uncles Robert and partner Rob Carpenter and Kenneth Carpenter; and numerous cousins and extended family.

Nancy was preceded in death by parents, Ruth and Cleron Carpenter, grandparents, Clara and Ole Dahlen and Harry and Mabel Carpenter.
