Jean Hoppe, 95, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully Saturday afternoon, September 9, 2017, at the RiverView Hospital in Crookston, surrounded by her loving family. Jean was born at Crookston on May 4, 1922, one of 5 children of the union of Emil Arthur and Ada Cordelia (Lymburner) Johnson. She grew up on the family farm near Crookston, and began her education at the District 68 country school before attending Crookston Central High School, where she graduated with the class of 1940. She took business courses at Crookston’s Northwest School and was employed there from 1943-1944. On May 19, 1944 Jean was united in marriage to Raymond Howard Hoppe at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Crookston. Settling into life together on their Fairfax Township farm, they not only shared the responsibilities of operating a successful farming operation, but together raised their 5 children: Curtis, Loren, Carolyn, David, and Linda in a very loving Christian home. They retired from farming in 1988.

Jean’s family, her church and community, meant everything to her. She was a devoted member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church and the Afternoon Guild. She taught Sunday School and Release Time for many years, and participated in the activities of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the church’s quilting group. Jean was active in 4-H, serving as Treasurer of the 4-H Leadership Council, and enjoyed the fellowship of many good friends of the East Fairfax Homemakers Club. She could always be counted on when help was needed and volunteered much of her time to charitable causes. She enjoyed baking, gardening, and sewing, but home-life was centered on her devotion to Ray, their children, and the family that grew to include many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jean and Ray loved traveling and making wonderful memories, including the “trip of a lifetime” they took to the Holy Land, Greece, and Egypt in 1993. Sadly, Ray passed away on March 5, 2008. Jean later moved to the Summit Apartments in Crookston, where she enjoyed making many new friends.

Grateful to have shared in Ray and Jean’s life and love, are their children: Curtis and Norma Hoppe of Crookston, MN, Loren Hoppe and Blas Valero of Northfield, MN/Zaragoza, Spain, Carolyn and Wayne Schenck of Crookston, David and Ida Hoppe of Crookston, and Linda and Jim Erickson of Bemidji, MN; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; sister, Lois (Jerry) Kicker of Vergas, MN; brother-in-law, Herman Prudhomme of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. In addition to Ray, her beloved husband of 63 years, Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Ada Johnson; brother, Marvin (Pat) Johnson; and twin sisters, Margaret Prudhomme and Barbara (George) McGrane. Blessed be Jean’s memory.
