Maxine Anderson, 98, former long-time Crookston resident, died peacefully in her sleep January 13 at her home in Edina. She was born on July 31, 1913 to Claude and Mabelle (Anderson) Harris and raised in Minneapolis where she graduated from West High School, attended the University of Minnesota and graduated from Eitel Hospital School of Nursing.
During a practicum in rural nursing in Crookston, she met her future husband, Carl G. Anderson. She worked as an operating room nurse in Portland, Oregon before her marriage to Carl in 1948. Following their marriage, Carl and Maxine lived and worked in Seattle but returned to Crookston in 1949 to care for Carl's father, and here they happily raised their family. They were members of Trinity Lutheran Church where Maxine taught Sunday School for many years. As her family grew, she devoted herself to her duties as a wife and mother, returning to work during her daughters' college years. At that time Maxine served as the director of the Northwest Tuberculosis Control Clinic in Crookston. In retirement, she enjoyed her volunteer work in the medical records department and gift shop of the Bethesda Hospital.
Following Carl's death in 1980, she remained in Crookston for several years, enjoying friendships and developing an interest in travel. She traveled to many European countries and the Holy Land but was especially pleased to be able to visit Norway, and reconnect with family there.
Moving to Edina in 1988 allowed her to be close to her younger daughter's family and participate in the lives of her grandchildren. Being "Mormor" to grandchildren Peter and Bekah was the special joy of her later years.
Maxine is survived by daughters Marilyn Anderson of Seattle, WA and Corinne (Dan) Engstrand of Bloomington, MN, grandchildren Peter and Rebekah Engstrand, brothers Arthur Harris and Wayne (Lois) Harris. Services will be held Friday, January 27 at 11:00 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 4100 Lyndale Ave. South, Minneapolis with visitation one hour prior to the service; interment at Oakdale Cemetery with a graveside service Saturday, January 28 at 11:00.
Memorials preferred to Trinity Lutheran Church, Crookston, MN or Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry, 122 West Franklin Ave., Suite 319, Minneapolis, MN 55404.
