Engbert “Bert” DeYoung, 89, of Chino, CA, formerly of Beltrami, MN, died on August 14, 2010 in Chino Valley Hospital, Chino.  He was born on the home farm in rural Crookston, MN to Louis and Tilda (Schat) DeYoung on August 12, 1921.  Bert attended rural school near his home.  Following his schooling, Bert entered the United States Army, serving as a paratrooper.  He served during WWII and was held as a prisoner of war for 11 months.  He was discharged and returned to Crookston.

In 1946, Bert married Ida Swenson at the parsonage in Shelly. Bert held several jobs over the next few years, before moving to Louisiana.  In 1954, they returned to Beltrami and farmed until 1965, when they moved to Azusa, CA.  Ida died in 1969.  Bert worked as an auto mechanic for GM until his retirement in 1986.  He married Jessie Contares in 1971, at Azusa and she passed away in 1990.  Bert was fortunate to meet and later marry Mildred Workman in Chino.  They have lived together since 1993.

In his retirement years, Bert volunteered at a local church, the Historical society, and an area women’s club.  He was very successful as a vegetable gardener.  Bert enjoyed shooting rifles with the gun club and was a member of the NRA.  He was famous for “doing things his way”.  In the last years, Bert was devoted to the well being of his beloved, Mildred.
