Talk over the past couple years among city officials and city council members that resulted in ordinance changes regarding the condition of homes and properties in town was put to the test earlier this week, when a north end property triggered citizen complaints.

During the open forum portion at the start of this week’s city council meeting, Bobby Baird and Jamey Lemke took to the podium to complain about the condition of the home at the corner of East Seventh Street and North Ash Street.

The two, both of whom live nearby, complained about the condition of the fence, tall weeds and grass growing around a tree cut down some time ago, and Tyvek energy shield paper that’s been blowing around because the home is being re-sided but the project isn’t complete.

“We shouldn’t have to put up with this crap,” Lemke said. “I know you guys and I like you guys, but I’ve had it.”

The home is owned by Marcel Champagne, who’s living in a house elsewhere. Fire Chief Richard Rock said today Champagne contacted him after the council meeting and said he’ll get a building permit and finish the siding project as soon as next week.

Rock said the Tyvek paper willl have to be removed and a new layer will have to be applied because it’s been exposed for too long.

Rock added that Champagne also indicated he’d make whatever other repairs are necessary and “spruce the place up” in general.
