Each year, Wal-Mart stores across the country sponsor “Shop with a Hometown Hero” events in which the store designates $1,000 that's divvied up into 20 $50 gift cards. On the shopping day, the cards are presented to participating children, who were referred by community service agencies. The “heroes” then take them around the store to hit the aisles, helping them shop for themselves and/or pick out gifts for family members.
“It's fun to see the look on their faces when they find out just what that little card can get them,” Crookston Wal-Mart Manager Vickie Shelton said.
Local heroes helping out included officers from the Crookston Police Department and Polk County Sheriff's Office, firefighters, the Northwest Regional Corrections Center personnel and Army National Guardsmen. There was also that universal hero who seems to pop up everywhere this time of year, Santa Claus. The children came from Crookston and surrounding towns.
“I'd like to thank everyone who helps make this possible every year,” said Shelton. “It really adds to the spirit of the season here.”
