Recognizing the contributions of women who have taken the lead in the environmental movement is the focus of Women’s History Month at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. March, which is annually recognized as Women’s History Month, is filled with events that encourage the care of and concern for our environment. Theme for the month is "Women Taking the Lead to Save our Planet." All events are free and the public is welcome.
The schedule of events includes:
• Monday, March 2 “Go Green Day” and Ice Cream Social: Wear green in recognition of the “green” theme chosen for Women’s History Month. Everyone is invited to the Northern Lights Lounge from noon to 2 p.m. for an ice cream social as a kick off celebration and to learn more about what is happening on campus during the month.
• Wednesday, March 4, Minnesota State Auditor Rebecca Otto will be the guest speaker at spring convocation to be held at 10 a.m. in Kiehle Auditorium. She was recognized by the Women’s History Month Project as a 2009 honoree because of her commitment to a greener planet. As a Minnesota State Representative, Otto worked to protect ecosystems, limit mercury emissions, protect groundwater, promote the development of commercial wind poser, and ban the use cancer-causing arsenic-treated wood in playgrounds.
• Thursday, March 5, Sustainability Fair with guest speaker Linda Kingery, executive director of the Northwest Minnesota Regional Sustainable Development Partnership. Kingery will focus on the issues regarding sustainability. A Sustainability Fair will be held in the Sargeant Student Center’s International Lounge from 2-4 p.m. and booths will host community, members, businesses, and campus organizations and focus on sustainability issues. In the Prairie Lounge at 4 p.m. Kingery will present followed by refreshments. Everyone is welcome.
• Wednesday, March 11, Isis Speaks – National Poetry Slam Champion, Isis will perform at 7 p.m. in the Kiehle Auditorium. Her poetry explores universal themes of empowerment, reclamation, love, abuse, and the mistakes we all make. The event is sponsored by Concerts and Lectures.
• Tuesday, March 24, Photo Voice Exhibit and Rachel Carson Documentary, Noon to 2 p.m. – Keeping Children Safe from Pesticides Photo Voice display followed by a viewing of the documentary “A Sense of Wonder: Rachel Carson’s Love of the Natural World and Her Fight to Defend It” will be held in Sargeant Student Center’s Bede Ballroom from noon to 2 p.m. In the evening, the Warner Brother’s animated feature Happy Feet will be shown at 7 p.m. in Kiehle Auditorium. The public is welcome to both events.
• Tuesday, March 31, Book Discussion on the book Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. The discussion will be held in the Sargeant Student Center Prairie Room from noon to 2 p.m. Anyone interested is encouraged to attend this book discussion on the topic of nature-deficit. The book is available in the U of M, Crookston Bookstore.
