Crookston Police Chief Tim Motherway said the burglars who broke into Four Season’s Clothing through a back door sometime last Thursday night or Friday morning, and then smashed through a 15-inch thick brick wall to get into Munn’s Jewelers next door “weren’t first-time burglars. These people knew what they were doing.”

The value of the items taken from the clothing store and jewelry from Munn’s is likely in excess of $100,000, the CPD indicated in a release.

The burglary was reported by Munn’s Jewelers minutes after 9 a.m. Friday. The responding officer found that both the jewelry store and Four Seasons Clothing located immediately to the south on North Broadway had been burglarized. An investigation determined that the back door of Four Seasons was the initial point of forced entry, and that two holes were chopped through the brick wall in order to access Munn’s.

Jewelry reported stolen includes gentleman’s rings, both with and without diamonds, engagement rings, wedding rings, diamond pendants and various white and yellow gold necklaces. Inventories are still be taken at both stores.

Motherway said he’s been involved in invetigations of some elaborate burglaries before, such as those involving thieves breaking into safes, but the Munn’s/Four Seasons crime “is by far the biggest burglary I can recall.”

So what can the perpetrators do with all that stolen jewelry? Plenty, Motherway said.
“They can take it apart and piece it out, they can melt down the gold,” he said. “It all depends on how elaborate the fencing organization is that they’re connected with.”

Motherway said the CPD has sent information about the crime to law enforcement agencies across the state and upper Midwest, and that he’s already been contacted by a couple departments who may have experienced similar burglaries.

Anyone with information on the burglaries is asked to contact the CPD at 281-3111.
