As a laboratory project in concrete construction, the Facility Maintenance and Safety class at the University of Minnesota, Crookston prepared, placed, and finished the foundation slab for the Walsh Park shelter, adjacent to the Villa St. Vincent in the fall of 2008. 
   

The students who participated in the concrete part of the construction are Shane Black, Amanda Bochow, Virginia Carrlson, Mitch Daly, Justin Devalk, Casey Fouts, Kyle Gratzek, Randy Haken, Nate Haler, Tyler Hanson, Bryan Haugen, Jake Hein, Ben Hoffarth, Alisha Maves, Jaime Mills, Darin Moen, Frank Pinta, Henry Pinta, Wayne Siemsen, Nick Sylvester, Gavin Waslaski, Nathan Whalen, and Stephen Whalen. 
   

This fall for a lab project in wood construction, another class constructed the park shelter on the concrete slab.  The shelter is 22’ x 18’ x 8’ high with a 20 inch roof overhang.  The shelter is constructed with a hip roof and the sides are open. 
   

The students who constructed the shelter are Hoang Capistran-Murphy, Tom Chute, Ashley Crowe, Jessica Fenlason, Brandon Hanson, Sean Johnson, Liz Julian, Alek Lexvold, Jacob Newland, Cory Oestreich, Jeff Runck, Kenny Schmid, Scott Stenger, Darin Weeks, Abbie Westby, Leonard Will, Casey Wollangk, and Christian Woods.
   

Wendell Johnson coordinated the project along with Rick Langlois, Patrick Yates, Rick Solheim, Kent Freberg and Kathy Hanson. 
   

The shelter will be a wonderful place for tenants of the Villa St Vincent/The Summit and their families to enjoy the outdoors while visiting in the park, said Judy Hulst, Villa administrator.  "Everyone is so appreciative of the hard work and collaboration between the UMC, the Villa St. Vincent, and the city," she added.
