A Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Community assists in building strong communities through uniting businesses, organizations and other agencies as a way to display the support of service members and their families. Just last year Crookston became an official "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" community. The 2nd Annual Yellow Ribbon Awareness Week, recognized in conjunction with Veterans' Day, will begin Sunday, Nov. 6 and continue through Saturday, Nov. 12.
There are many ways Crookston residents can show their support. Community members are encouraged to tie a yellow ribbon around a tree in the front yard, place one on the front door, display a ribbon in a window, place magnetic yellow ribbons on vehicles and fly the American flag high. Crookston businesses may display a "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" sign, place yellow ribbon in and around the business and encourage employees to wear yellow ribbon throughout the week.
It is also important to include the younger population of the community. Crookston youth in the public and parochial schools are decorating Hugo's grocery bags to be used during the week. In addition, incorporating "Beyond the Yellow Ribbon" into Sunday school activities and including all service members and their families in the prayer lists are great ways to show support.
Mark your calendars, because there are two dates and many events to keep in mind. A veteran’s dinner will be held at the American Legion on Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Also, Veterans' Day is Nov. 11. Members of the community are invited to attend the laying of the wreath ceremony at the Memorial Walkway at 11 a.m. followed by a light lunch for veterans, their families and friends at the VFW from noon to 2 p.m. Also, Highland Elementary School is hosting a Veterans' Day program at 1:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.
Come out and show support for the service members by getting involved. Encourage friends and family to wear red, white and blue, display yellow ribbons and attend the events being help in honor of the service members.
