At the 2011 Ice Buster Daze, Guy Reierson, left, and Jim Noah grilled up hot dogs for the hungry masses. The Crookston Daily Times, Noah Insurance Service and B & E Meats are teaming up at this year's ice fishing event to grill up lunch for everyone. All proceeds from a free-will offering will benefit future Ice Buster Daze events.

1 The 9th Annual Ice Buster Daze, featuring a full day of festivities from morning to night made possible by numerous sponsors, will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Crookston. But there’s a major change on the schedule this year.

2 Due to ice conditions on the Red Lake River across from the Crookston Fire Department, the snowmobile radar runs have been cancelled. Organizer Bobby Baird said the ice in that area of the river has been deemed too unstable for the snowmobile runs. Baird and other organizers said they’ve looked for alternate sites, including land near Crookston Sports Center and along the Highway 75 bypass, but they keep running into the same problem: Not enough snow. “It’s too bad, but we just can’t make the radar runs happen this year,” Baird said.

3 But the ice-fishing event, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the Red Lake River at Central Park, is on. (Registration begins at noon. The $20 cost per hole includes the meatball supper later Saturday at the Eagles.) Baird said the Polk County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Natural Resources have determined that the ice in that area is more stable, and safe. But, Baird added, participants won’t be able to drive their vehicles onto the river. Instead, they’ll have to park in Central Park and bring their gear onto the ice. Tickets for ice fishing are available in advance at Ceasons Bait & Tackle, or at the gate on Saturday. Prizes will be awarded to the top 20  anglers. The Crookston Daily Times, Noah Insurance Service and B & E Meats are teaming up to grill up lunch for everyone on the ice. All proceeds from the free-will offering will benefit future Ice Buster Daze events. (No alcoholic beverages will be allowed on the ice.)

Full day
Ice Buster Daze kicks off with a breakfast at the Eagles from 8 to 11 a.m. Scrambled eggs, pancakes and french toast are on the menu. A free-will offering will be accepted. After the day’s events, it’s back to the Eagles for a meatball dinner from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and dance featuring Tommy Helgeson.
