A representative of a Crookston-area business on Tuesday provided a credit card number over the phone and approved a donation to a fund-raising effort in the Crookston School District to send a bus full of students to a Twin Cities museum.
Trouble is, no legitimate fund-raising effort is underway to raise money for such a trip. After hearing of the telephone call and subsequent donation, Crookston Police contacted the school district and learned that no current fund-raising activity for a museum trip is being sponsored by the district.
The Crookston Chamber of Commerce did some checking, too, on Tuesday and subsequently emailed its members, urging that they take a very cautious approach when faced with similar fund-raising calls.
The CPD urges residents to verify with the school district before donating any money to any purported fund-raising efforts.
