Crookston, Minn. -

During a statewide, December-long DWI enforcement effort, Crookston Police Department, Polk County Sheriff’s Office and East Grand Forks Police Department are promoting a gift that should be on everyone’s wish-list — a “Designated Driver Gift Certificate.”

The certificates can be sent via email at www.minnesotasafeandsober.org. They allow friends to offer a safe and sober ride for a specific night out, and call for the recipient to return the favor.

December is one of the deadliest months for alcohol-related crashes. During 2005–2007 in December, 41 motorists were killed in alcohol-related crashes and another 10,553 were arrested for DWI.

The effort includes participation from around 400 law enforcement agencies and is part of Safe & Sober, administered by the state Department of Public Safety.
