The Climax-Fisher Knights hung with the Pirate boys’ basketball team for a while Monday evening at Crookston High School, but a 23-1 first-half run opened up what was a 12-10 game and pretty much sealed the deal. The Pirates cruised to an 82-48 win, extending their winning streak to five.
The Pirates were led by Brett Delage’s 18 points, but had three other players reach double figures, too, with Alec Boike scoring 15, Aaron Hollcraft 14 and Jordan Brewster putting in a dozen. Senior point guard Ross Forney scored in the single digits, with 9 points, but dished out 10 assists. Rounding out the scoring were Aaron Remick with 8, Travis Vatthauer with 4 and Michael Hefta with a bucket. Delage also had seven steals, one more than Forney.
Alex Wentzel led the Knights with 13 points.
With the Pirates up 12-10, they cranked up their defensive pressure and hit the boards hard, turning a tight contest into a 41-23 halftime lead. They outscored Climax-Fisher 41-25 in the second half.
Head Coach Greg Garmen said many things are contributing to the Pirates’ winning streak. For one thing, the team is limiting its turnovers. For another, he said the players are getting more accustomed to each other’s play.
“We are learning where our teammates are going to be, which is leading to some easy hoops for us,” he told the Times.
Garmen cited the improved play and increased scoring of Brewster, “which we needed.” He said the defense is more aggressive, and the team is getting the ball down low on offense. “We are getting the ball to our posts more often and need to continue to do that,” he said.
Garmen said the players are playing as a team more than they did early on, and attributed some of that teamwork to Forney, the team’s captain. “We are getting great leadership from him,” Garmen said.
The win pushes the Pirates’ record to 9-5. Next up is a trip to Thief River Falls on Thursday.
The Pirates’ “B” team defeated the Knights 48-40, with Ryan Porter leading the way with 22 points. The “C” team won 49-17. Parker Salentine and Ben Dorman each scored 10.
