FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota lawmaker from Fargo says he’ll propose a bill next year based on Arizona’s controversial immigration law.
Republican state Rep. Jim Kasper says he wants his bill to be as close as possible to the Arizona law, which mandates that law officers check the immigration status of people they stop or arrest and have reason to believe might be in the country illegally.
Critics of the Arizona law say it invites racial profiling, but Kasper says it’s meant to make sure police verify the residency status of people they encounter.
House Democratic leader Merle Boucher (boo-SHAY’) says he’s fine with having a debate on an immigration bill but doesn’t see it as a high priority. He says it could be a distraction.
The Arizona law goes into effect July 29. It’s being challenged by the federal government.
