The Northwest Minnesota Women’s Fund has announced the recipients of the 2011 regional Outstanding Community Builder Awards, and they are Betty Arvidson of Crookston and Barbara Muesing of Crookston, Lengby and Fosston. The third recipient this year is Becky Dorman of Clearbrook, Minnesota.
Outstanding Community Builder Awards are presented to women who have demonstrated leadership in improving their communities in their chosen professions, as volunteers, mentors, and in raising or supporting families.
Betty Arvidson was nominated for the Community Builder Award by Crookston City Administrator Aaron Parrish, who noted: “Betty’s unique ability to balance work, family, and community service is astounding and inspirational.” He added, “Most impressive is her ability and willingness to do whatever is needed in every situation to create the best possible outcome.”
Arvidson has been the Crookston City Clerk/Treasurer for the past 11 years and previously was Deputy Clerk/Treasurer in both Crookston and Red Lake Falls. She has held leadership positions in the Minnesota Clerks and Finance Officers Association, and is on the Board of Directors of Greater Minnesota Management; Northwest Regional Development Commission Enterprise Fund; Crookston Housing and Economic Development Association; and the Minnesota Government Finance Association.
Arvidson has also taken a lead role in many community organizations over the past twenty years. She has served on the Crookston Youth Soccer Board, Parks & Recreation Board, Villa St Vincent Board, Riverview Hospital Board of Directors, Crookston Lions, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Crookston Chamber of Commerce and the Blast to Bede Committee. Betty, a native of Red Lake Falls, is married to Bruce Arvidson and they have two daughters, Kristen and Brenda. Betty Arvidson will be honored at a reception on Saturday, Nov. 5.
Barbara Muesing began working for the University of Minnesota in 1965, serving as an Extension Educator, Program Leader, and District Director. She also served ten years as the Executive Director and Corporate Secretary to the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. Since then, she has dedicated herself to a range of pursuits including University outreach, continuing education, rural health and vital aging. Muesing is very active in several state-wide health organizations, including the Board of Directors of the Minnesota Rural Health Association; the Minnesota Hospital Association Trustee Council, and is the current President of the Health Care Auxiliary of Minnesota, whose vision is to be the united voice of the healthcare community.
In addition to her commitment in statewide health organizations, Muesing is a leader and tireless volunteer in both the Crookston and Fosston communities. In Crookston, she has provided leadership to the United Way, Riverview Auxiliary, the Polk County Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP), and Crookston Rotary, to name a few. Muesing serves the community of Fosston as a Trustee on the Board of Directors of Essentia Health Fosston and has led many fundraising events to better the community.

Her nomination states in part “Barbara is an excellent role model who enlivens others to help create a better, stronger, healthier community. She is a positive individual who always sees the good in the efforts of others and rarely accepts accolades for any of the commendable outcomes she has achieved.”
Muesing is a native of Lengby, Minn. and is married to Dr. Charles Casey, chancellor of the University of Minnesota, Crookston. Barbara Muesing will be recognized at a reception in her honor on Friday, Nov. 4.
Since the inception of the Outstanding Community Builder Award in 1998, 37 women have been recognized for helping make northwest Minnesota a better place to live, work and raise families.
