ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — When videos of flashing lights in the St. Paul sky earlier this month drew widespread speculation about UFOs, the man behind them loved the attention.
Thirty-four-year-old Ernest Sawka Jr. tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press that he considered coming forward, but the truth didn’t come out until early Friday.
According to a police report, that’s when police were investigating ‘‘an unidentified flying object in the sky’’ in St. Paul about 12:50 a.m. and found Sawka.
He was behind a school flying a kite with small lights attached to the string. He told officers he had been flying similar kites all year.
The St. Paul man told the newspaper he wasn’t trying to trick people, but called himself a ‘‘kind of goofy’’ person trying to have fun.
He was arrested on an outstanding warrant unrelated to kite flying.
