• They’ll go over the
spring flood scenario
Although the spring flood outlook is more ominous along the Red River than it is along the winding banks of the Red Lake River in Crookston, National Weather Service hydrologists and Polk County Emergency Management want to make sure everyone is on the same page as the spring melt grows closer on the calendar.

And, then there’s the fact that the snow keeps piling up, and there’s plenty of winter yet to come.

Grand Forks NWS hydrologists and Polk County Emergency Management officials are inviting local flood fighters to come to Youngquist Auditorium on the University of Minnesota, Crookston campus on Wednesday, Feb. 10 to get up to date on the latest outlook data and discuss the upcoming flood scenario. The meeting will begin at 2 p.m. Youngquist Auditorium is located across from the livestock barns.

The end-of-January spring flood outlook projects a 4 percent chance of a major flood in Crookston, which would involve a crest of the Red Lake River in excess of 25 feet, and a 9 percent chance of a moderate flood. For comparison purposes, in Fargo-Moorhead, there’s an 86 percent chance of a major flood of the Red River.
