Law enforcement leaders in the Twin Cities are asking lawmakers to invest more money in quality early education programs, in hopes of reducing violent crime.

Prosecutors from Ramsey and Dakota counties, the Hennepin County Sheriff, a Minneapolis police captain and others will release details of a report Tuesday that they say shows investing more money in high-quality pre-kindergarten programs can reduce crime in the long run. They say early education funding also reduces special education costs down the road.

The law enforcement leaders are calling on Sen. Al Franken and Rep. John Kline to push for education models that include early learning. Franken and Kline are on education committees in Congress.
