DICKINSON, N.D. (AP) — A judge sentenced a Dickinson man to 8 1/2 years in prison for shooting another man who allegedly refused to leave his apartment.
Michael Reisenauer apologized to the relatives of Kyle Goodbird before Southwest District Judge Patrick Weir sentenced him on Tuesday.
The incident happened in July 2009. Reisenauer allegedly pointed a rifle at the 19-year-old Goodbird and counted off the number of seconds Goodbird had to leave his apartment. When Reisenauer reached zero, he shot Goodbird.
Reisenauer was charged with murder. A jury convicted him last April of the lesser charge of negligent homicide.
Goodbird’s sister, Cynthia Benson, said she had hoped for a longer sentence. Benson said she didn’t believe Reisenauer was sorry for what he did.
