Don't let the title fool you: While "Zombie Prom" may sound like a teenage horror flick, it's actually a musical romantic comedy set in the atomic 1950s, complete with an original catchy 1950s-style score. Music and theater students at the University of Minnesota, Crookston will be performing the musical Wednesday through Sunday, Nov. 16-20, on the stage of Kiehle Auditorium, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with a special matinee at 3 p.m. Sunday.
"Zombie Prom" opens at Enrico Fermi High, ruled under the tyrannical hand of Principal Miss Delilah Strict. Jonny, a rebel who spells his name without the “H,” and pretty senior Toffee fall in love during an air raid drill at the school. But when her parents forbid her to see him anymore, she ends the romance and he tears off on his motorcycle, right into the Francis Gary Powers nuclear plant. He ends up in a watery grave with the rest of the nuclear waste.
Mourning for her lost love, Toffee begins hearing Jonny's voice and he eventually reappears, glowing in green and determined to attend the upcoming prom, graduate from high school and win back Toffee's heart. Miss Strict, however, stands vehemently against zombies and sets about making Jonny, and everyone else for that matter, miserable. Meanwhile, reporter Eddie Flagrante picks up on the story and runs with it, even putting Jonny on national television. Everything comes to a very surprising head on prom night (theme: “A night of molecules and miracles”).
