The Minnesota Department of Education today released the results of the latest Minnesota Comprehension Assessments (MCA II), and while Crookston School District students continue to score below the state average in reading and  math, there has been noticeable improvement from the previous numbers. The groups tested were grades 3 through 8, along with grade 11.

The results for the local district show that 57 percent of students are proficient in math, which is up from 54 percent last year. However, the state average is 64 percent. Reading scores for the district showed a 71 percent proficiency, just one percentage point below the state average. This number is up from Crookston's score last year of 65 percent.

A voice mail left for Superintendent Wayne Gilman this morning seeking his thoughts on the latest scores hadn't been returned as of press time.

The state as a whole has improved as well, moving from an average in math of 62 percent and in reading of 71 percent up to averages of 64 percent and 72 percent, respectively. However, these scores will not prevent more Minnesota school districts from being added to No Child Left Behind non-Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) list. The Crookston district is currently on the list, and has a required improvement plan in place to try to get off the list.

The science testing results will be released on July 21.

The following are results for area school districts, with the math results on the left, and reading on the right:
    • Climax: 44%, 59%
    • East Grand Forks: 57%, 85%
    • Fertile-Beltrami: 68%, 80%
    • Fisher: 71%, 83%
    • Red Lake Falls: 47, 62%
    • Thief River Falls: 63%, 72%
    • Warren-A-O: 69%, 72%
