Talking Cars: Cool Mini a tough fix

I have a 2002 Mini Cooper. The automatic transmission failed last week without warning. The dealer wants $9,500 for a new transmission. They say it cannot be rebuilt. I contacted transmission repair companies and have been told that BMW, Mini’s parent company, will not sell them the parts to rebuild Minis. The car is low mileage, great condition with all of the options and the NADA Blue Book for a private sale is $10,800. I have since seen on the Internet that this seems to be a common problem with the automatics. Why doesn’t BMW stand behind their products? They must be aware that the transmission is defective. The cost to repair is prohibitive, so my Mini sits in my driveway while I ponder my next step. Any advice would be welcome.

Curb commuting costs

Many schools and employers are encouraging — and even organizing — carpooling and car-sharing operations in an effort to help the environment and eliminate parking hassles. Sharing a ride can be a great way to cut your commuting costs, but they require some time investment up front.

Eric P. Bloom: The management dress code

Dressing appropriately at work will not necessarily help you, but not following your company’s unwritten dress code norms can hurt your upward mobility. Certainly there are general business rules that define what is and is not acceptable to wear in the workplace. Every company is different, so be careful when adapting this advice to your specific work environment.

Brian Mackey: Documentary puts advertising world on display

Last weekend, the AMC television show “Mad Men” returned for another season of drinking, smoking and character-driven product pitching in the mid-’60s heyday of Madison Avenue advertising agencies. A documentary now available on DVD looks at the reality behind the age of advertising.
