Hockey photos being added to Event Arena; CHS Industrial Technology students are helping out
Retired Crookston Parks & Recreation Director Scott Kleven approached the Park Board a year ago to offer to take the reins on a project for the Crookston Sports Center and he happily reported Monday that the project is well on its way with the assistance of Crookston High School Industrial Technology students in Travis Oliver’s woods classes.
Kleven’s idea of adding photos of past hockey teams to the Event Arena’s upper level counters against the rails is getting closer to completion with the girls hockey program finished.
Kleven said he wanted to honor the hockey programs with photos of the teams going as far back as he could and mentioned that he is working on the Cathedral Blue Wave next because their program stopped in 1980.
“The counters will have a tougher acrylic plexiglas that will protect the pictures,” Kleven reassured the Park Board. “I’ve had some private people come forward with a few photos as well.”
Kleven told the Times later that he attributes some of the photos to Larry and Judy Brekken, Doug Sullivan, and Pat, Bill & Pam Sullivan.
In one photo that was passed around at the Park Board meeting, current Parks & Recreation Director Scott Riopelle said he recognized three hockey players that went on to play for the University of North Dakota.
“Would there be enough room for Dreams on Ice (figure skating) photos?” asked Park Board member Becky Kofoed to which Kleven nodded his head in agreement and added that another suggestion would be to put former hockey cheerleaders photos as well.
