Fourth-graders are doing the '40 Book Challenge.'

To promote the “40 Book Challenge” for fourth-graders at Highland School, fourth-grade teacher Kari Heppner portrayed “The Library Dragon” for fourth-graders in the large-group room.

The 40 Book Challenge, she said, invites fourth-graders to read 40 books across different genres during the school year.

“It is a personal challenge for each student, not a contest or competition between students or classes,” Heppner noted. “What matters is that students stretch themselves as readers and increase their competence and confidence, and  reading motivation through their daily participation in our reading community.”

The goal is to empower all, teachers included, to grow as readers and find reading interesting and meaningful. “We also hope to develop students' positive reading identities and development as lifelong readers,” Heppner added.
