The semi tipped, spilling hot tar on the road.

A Grand Forks County road was shut down for more than six hours Wednesday after a semitrailer carrying hot tar slid into a ditch and lost its load.

The North Dakota Highway Patrol says the crash happened early Wednesday afternoon about 5 miles east of Thompson. The semi tipped on its side in the ditch and the trailer ruptured, spilling hot tar on the road and in the ditch. The road was shut down for cleanup.

The Manitoba man driving the truck was taken to a Grand Forks hospital with unspecified injuries.

Authorities did not immediately determine why his truck went off the road. The crash is under investigation.

The road closure impacted motorists coming into Minnesota on Polk County Highway 9.
