Family and friends of Crookston High School students Michael Ramirez and McKenzie Schmiedt  gathered for a going-away party for the pair at the Lions Picnic Shelter in Highland Park before the two left on June 13 for U.S. Army National Guard basic training.

McKenzie, 17, enlisted in November 2017 and subsequently recruited Michael, also 17, who enlisted in January 2018.

Since their enlistment they have been active in monthly drills in Moorhead and Little Falls, and their family and friends are looking forward to their graduation from basic training in August in South Carolina.

McKenzie and Michael will then return to Crookston to complete their senior year at CHS, before returning to the Guard to train in their chosen fields.

McKenzie will be training in the artillery field, and Michael in mechanics.

Their families thank everyone who attended the party to wish them farewell and show them love and support.
