The Crookston Rotary Club will have a scholarship available to Crookston High School seniors in memory of Allen Pedersen who passed away in 2017 at the age of 101.

Times Assistant Editor Jess Bengtson, who will be president of the Rotary in July 2018, wanted to honor his memory by adding a scholarship in Pedersen’s name solely based on community service and volunteerism. The scholarship is not grade-based, but concentrates on how active a student is both in school and out in the community.

“Allen believed in service above self, one of Rotary’s mottos, and what better way to honor that than with a scholarship to a student that is out volunteering in the community,” said Bengtson. “He was always encouraging me to be as active as I could because giving back is important.”

Pedersen was deeply involved in the Rotary Club attending almost every meeting, participating in fundraisers that sent donations back out into the community, was active in other clubs and organizations, and helped create the Allen and Freda Pedersen Gardens at the University of Minnesota Crookston that currently feeds students on campus, and excess produce goes out into the community through the Crookston Farmers Market.

CHS seniors interested in applying for the Crookston Rotary Club Community Service Scholarship in honor of Allen Pedersen should stop by their counselor’s office for an application. Deadline to apply is April 15, 2018.
