For some, winter means ice skating, sledding and hot chocolate. For many though, winter means dry, rough and itchy skin.

Because cold air has much less moisture than warm air, dry skin in the winter months is common. Our strong Minnesota winds can also strip skin of its liquid and contribute to dry skin. But if you know what causes your skin irritation and how to prevent it, you can have healthy skin and a beautiful glow all year round, according to Rebekah Aakre, FNP-C.

Aakre specializes in dermatology at RiverView Health and will share tips on how to deal with dry skin and a variety of other issues at RiverView’s Feb. 1 health luncheon “A Healthy Glow.” Aakre has been offering dermatology services at RiverView since July 2016.

It’s no secret that as we age our skin becomes thinner and drier. Along with age comes wrinkles, age spots, dark circles and large pores. While you can’t control your age or the weather, you can control numerous other factors that accelerate the aging process.

At the Feb. 1 event, Aakre will explain common skin conditions that present in adults and will review products on the market that are beneficial for those conditions. She’ll also discuss the importance of a daily skin regimen and ways to prevent skin cancer.
