Ever wonder where the phrase "spread eagle" came from?

Ever wonder where the phrase "spread eagle" came from?  Here's a bald eagle doing just that.  Sunbathing. Scientists say they "assume the position" to maintain feather health - exposure to the sun helps convert chemicals in their preening oil into vitamin D. Another theory - exposing insect parasites in their feathers makes it easier to pick them off.  But it might just be for the same reason we humans sunbathe - it feels good. You can see them from the wildlife drive at the Agassiz Valley impoundment near Warren.
