It would be outside Fertile city limits, and some board members express reservations

Polk County Planning and Zoning director Josh Holte brought a number of items to the board of commissioners this week and the future Dollar General store in Fertile came up for numerous reasons.

Holte said RSBR Investments, LLC requested a resolution to rezone agricultural land to commercial zoning district for Dollar General as well as a request for a conditional use permit to construct and operate a commercial retail business with liquor sales in the commercial zoning district. He mentioned that they’d like to have the store open by June 2018.

“They want to have retail beer and wine sales, and they’re out of city limits so it will be a county thing,” explained Holte. “They’ll be located at Highway 32 and County Road 1.”

District 4 Commissioner Joan Lee expressed some concerns with liquor sales being a part of the same building as Dollar General being that many families with children shop there.

“I’m having a real hard time connecting those together,” Lee stated.

“It is a little odd,” added District 5 Commissioner Don Diedrich.

Additional discussion led to the board members asking if other Dollar General stores in the area carried beer and wine and it was found that they did not, but that the franchise does have stores outside the area that do.

There are multiple Dollar General stores in Polk County and the surrounding area including locations in Erskine, Fosston, Red Lake Falls, Warren, Ada, Mahnomen, Hawley, Hallock, Barnesville, Roseau, Warroad, Menahga, Hillsboro, Mayville, and Larimore.
